about

"Glitch (That's How It Happens)" is a living, thumping thing: a dance floor rave-up about confusing tenderness with fragility; a muscular tune that casts doubt on the importance of your body. Vocal harmonies electrify the hairs on the back of your neck. Saxophone layers pile on top of one another, reaching ever upward. Through it all, a slinking, pumping foundation keeps your head nodding and your hips moving. So go on, shake it—all while the chorus repeats, "I can't shake it."

lyrics

I am settled into my foundation
Save my summer teeth, they grind my patience
I am not a thing with bars and borders
But I crumble quick like brick and mortar

That's how it happens
Cultivate a kind of softness
As it complicates and deepens
Scared they're gonna think it's weakness

Now you advocate for walking wounded
Did your calluses impede your movement?

I can't shake it
I still have this bruise
Nothing changes
No matter what I do
It's not fading, no
Yellow, purple, blue
Is not fading, no

That's how it happens
Hiding place out of habit
Remember when the thought would break me
Remember when my hands were shaking
That's how it happens
Cultivate a kind of softness
As it complicates and deepens
Scared they're gonna think it's weakness

I could patch myself with incantations
But I stumble in my awkward cadence
As the limbs I know collapse around me
There are upper limits to my body

I can't shake it, I still have this bruise
Nothing changes, no matter what I do
